TMJ Treatment Bellaire

Addressing Jaw Pain to Improve Your Quality of Life

Although it is difficult to determine the number of individuals living with temporomandibular disorders (TMD), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a study in 2020 that states an estimated 11.2-12.4 million U.S. adults experienced pain in the area surrounding the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) that could be associated with TMDs in 2018. Treating these joints requires careful examination and diagnosis if effective, long-term results are to be achieved. Our team addresses chronic jaw pain by using different forms of TMJ treatment in Bellaire, including occlusal splints, BOTOX treatment, and equilibration/occlusal adjustments. If you are suffering from unexplained TMJ pain, call our office to schedule an appointment.

Not all patients experience the same symptoms when dealing with TMJ disorder; however, some of the most common signs include:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Pain throughout the jaw, head, and neck
  • Lockjaw
  • Teeth grinding and/or clenching (bruxism)
  • Earaches
  • Jaw stiffness or clicking upon opening and closing
  • Difficulty eating or chewing
  • Limited oral movement
  • A change in one’s bite

TMJ Treatment Options

Treating TMJ requires a thorough examination, discussion of one’s health history, and diagnostic imaging to determine the severity of the issue and create a formal diagnosis. At West Loop Dental Aesthetics, we offer the following treatment options:

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

Equilibration/occlusal adjustment is recommended when a patient’s bite is “off.” Teeth that do not properly align can result in additional pressure being placed on the TMJs. By altering specific teeth, the bite’s normal placement and usage are restored, creating a more fluid motion and alleviating discomfort.

Occlusal Splints

Placing occlusal splint on model of teeth

Teeth grinding and clenching can wear down a person’s jaw joints over time. With a customized occlusal splint, the patient will wear the appliance while asleep (or also throughout the day) so that the teeth do not touch, and the bite and jaw position will change to alleviate the pressure that was once placed on the TMJs.

BOTOX® Treatment

Injecting BOTOX into female patients jaw

BOTOX can be used to treat TMJ disorder by temporarily relaxing the jaw muscles so that pain is minimized, and oral movement improves. Dr. Estella will determine the number of injections that are required, but BOTOX is generally used in combination with other forms of TMJ treatment to achieve lasting results.
