What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a prosthesis that serves as the base of a new tooth. Similar to a traditional tooth root, the titanium post is placed within the jawbone to deliver continuous stimulation once it has fused with the bone and surrounding tissues. It is then topped with a metal abutment, which is the connector between the implant post and restoration, and a custom-made dental crown, bridge, or denture. The type of restoration a patient receives is determined during the initial consultation with Dr. Estella.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process requires four distinct steps that every patient must go through. They include the initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and abutment placement, and the delivery of the final restoration. Each individual’s treatment plan will be different, but these four steps will be followed to produce long-lasting results:

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – Dr. Estella will meet with the patient to go over their oral and overall health history as well as capture CBCT images to produce a thorough treatment plan. She will discuss whether additional treatments are required, such as bone grafting or gum disease treatment.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Instead of being referred to an outside specialist, patients will remain in-house while Dr. Estella completes the surgery. She will administer local anesthesia before placing each implant into its designated spot along the jawbone.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After the surgery is complete, the patient will return home to recover. The timeframe for osseointegration (the implant and bone fusing) is usually 4-6 months, at which time the individual will return to our office to have their metal abutment(s) attached.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – During the dental implant process, an impression of the patient’s mouth will be captured to create their custom restoration. After they are fully healed from receiving their abutment(s), we will attach their new crown, bridge, or denture to unveil a fully restored smile that works normally and looks naturally beautiful.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide exceptional benefits to those seeking a long-term solution to tooth loss. Some include:

  • A Reduced Risk of Bone Loss – Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, which minimizes the risk of potential bone and tooth loss in the future.
  • Greater Confidence – Patients with dental implants feel more comfortable and confident talking with others and eating the foods they love.
  • Prosthetics That Last – Dental implants are known for their longevity. Many patients enjoy their prosthetics for 30+ years.
  • Minimal Maintenance – There are no additional products that need to be purchased to maintain dental implants, as they act like regular teeth and can be cleaned using a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste.
