Risk Factors of Gum Disease

As patients get older, the risk of gum disease and its more advanced stages increases. It is believed that nearly 3 in 4 adults over the age of 65 have some form of it. Some of the common risk factors associated with gum disease include:

  • Genetics (patient is at an increased risk if parent or grandparent had gum disease)
  • Pregnancy, as hormonal changes can lead to bleeding gums
  • Malocclusion (bite misalignment, including overbite or crooked teeth)
  • Lack of good oral hygiene habits
  • Ill-fitting dental prosthetics (dental bridge) or fillings
  • Health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Stress
  • Smoking or using tobacco products

Scaling & Root Planing with Perioflow Treatment

Scaling and root planing is a form of deep cleaning that is standard for treating gum disease. We use Perioflow air-polishing technology for a gentler, non-invasive approach. The device removes stains, plaque, and calculus from the teeth and above and below the gumline before reaching down into the gum pockets to smooth the roots of teeth. This allows the gums to reattach to the patient’s teeth and makes it harder for bacteria to accumulate in the future.
